Heirloom Shadow Work Borders - (View)
Twin Needle Shadow Work

The shadow work borders in this set are made using a twin needle.  When embroidered on light or sheer fabrics such as batiste, lightweight linen, silk organza, etc., the two top threads combine underneath and show through the fabric, creating a slightly raised “shadow” effect.  These borders and frames are beautiful on clothing, linens, and other heirloom projects.  Detailed instructions are included in a PDF file.

Please note that SEW format only contains the 2x2 designs, PCS format contains 2x2 and 4x4 designs, and JEF format contains 2x2, 4x4, and 5x7 designs.  ART, HUS, PES, and VIP formats contain the entire set.

This pretty pillow was made using two tea towels from All About Blanks.  The front of the pillow was embroidered with Heirloom Shadow Work Borders and Sweet Spring Appliqué.

I placed the appliqué fabric on the back of the tea towel to create a shadow work effect when embroidering the chicks.

These baby clothes were embellished with Heirloom Shadow Work Borders.  The overskirt of the dress was made with tea towels from All About Blanks.

Heirloom Shadow Work Borders and Babes and Toys look sweet on the little boy's outfit.  The bodice of the dress was made with leftover fabric from the tea towels and embroidered with one of the shadow work bows.

This baby bonnet was designed by Martha Nelson and made with French Cotton Lace and Swiss Entredeux from Martha Pullen.

The pictures below show what each design will look like when sewn with a twin needle.  The shaded area indicates the shadow work.
